South African port terminal operator Transnet declared force majeure at all ports in the country on October 7 after its employees began a strike over wages, foreign media reported. South Africa is the latest country to see a strike by port workers that threatens to cripple operations at the country's main ports and its rail network. They will take part in the strike from Monday, October 10
They represent about 48,500 workers employed by Transnet, or about 86 percent of the company's workforce, according to the union. Both unions are protesting Transnet's offer of a 3% wage increase for workers, saying it is below South Africa's 7.6% inflation rate. Transnet had doubled its offer from 1.5% to 3% to avoid strike action.
According to local reports, Transnet considered the strike illegal and responded by declaring force majeure at its ports. The strike is expected to have a major impact on South Africa's economy
